Jerez de la Frontera, the ideal getaway

The summit of flamenco and wine

Jerez de la Frontera has become in recent years one of the great wine tourism destinations in Spain thanks to the famous sherry wine. Visiting some of its wineries, attending flamenco shows or visiting its historical monuments are the main attractions of this charming Andalusian city. Its historic center surrounds the Alcázar de Jerez, an 11th century Moorish fortress that will leave you in awe. Likewise, you cannot visit Jerez and not enjoy its gastronomy or visit the various tabancos scattered throughout the historic center.

Tabanco: establishment that emerged in Jerez, which mixed the social concept of the tavern and the commercial vocation of "wine dispatch".

Why choose Jerez for your next getaway?

Whether for its renowned wineries, for its flamenco art or because it hosts the motorcycle Grand Prix once a year, Jerez de la Frontera has become an obligatory stop for those who visit the province of Cadiz and wish to immerse themselves in the Andalusian culture. Solomillo (sirloin steak) and chicharrones (pork rinds), baked fish and seafood to start, and don't miss the tapas of tortilla de patatas, salmorejo and ensaladilla rusa. In Jerez, it's hard to stay hungry.

As mentioned above, the passage of time has turned the city into a unique destination thanks to its incalculable cultural heritage. The Horse Fair, the motorcycle world championship or the "zambombas" are attractions known both nationally and internationally. So much is the tourist growth that the emblematic Andalusian city is having due to the high demand of tourists, that airlines like Vueling are creating new routes such as Paris-Jerez.

Financial Times names Jerez as "Vatican" of wine

The British newspaper with a special emphasis on international business and economic news, the Financial Times, has recently published an article in which they make special mention of Jerez. They recommend the city as one of three European "small wonders" to visit this fall for an ideal getaway. The author of the article, Paul Richardson, highlights that the main charm of Jerez is being able to enjoy a unique cultural heritage without the burden of mass tourism. Paul also highlights the must-see medieval Alcazar and the enormous 18th century cathedral, "Its center is a harmonious blend of bell towers, palm trees and tar-roofed bodegas".

Finally, the newspaper mentions some typical Jerez bars and restaurants that are a must visit, such as "Bar Juanito" or the restaurant "La Carboná". Among his tour, Paul highlights some traditional taverns or tabancos such as "La Pandilla" or "El Pasaje", where tourists can enjoy flamenco shows with a sherry in hand.
